The Complete Yacht & Boat Cleaning Guide for South Florida

South Florida is a paradise for boating and a tough place to keep a boat clean. This guide covers how often to clean, what to do inside and out, how to keep mildew away, and when it makes sense to hire a mobile cleaning service.

Why South Florida is hard on yachts and boats

Salt air, strong sun, heavy rain and year-round humidity all work against a clean boat. Salt leaves a film that dries into spots, sunscreen and spills soak into seats, and humidity feeds mildew in closed cabins.

The good news is that regular, gentle cleaning prevents most of it. Dirt that is removed early is much easier to remove than dirt that has baked in for months.

A simple cleaning schedule

Match the schedule to how you use the boat. These are general guidelines, not rules.

Exterior cleaning basics

Start dry by clearing loose debris, then work in sections with a soft brush and boat-safe soap. Rinse thoroughly so soap never dries on the surface, and finish with clean microfiber on glass.

Wet decks are slippery, so wear non-slip shoes. Use products made for marine surfaces and follow your marina’s rules on cleaning products and runoff.

Interior cleaning and mildew control

Vacuum first, then wipe hard surfaces, clean the galley and heads, and spot-treat upholstery. Use as little water as possible on carpet and cushions and dry everything fully.

Mildew needs moisture and stale air. Ventilate when it is safe, use moisture absorbers and wipe condensation. If mildew keeps returning, have the source checked, since it can point to a leak.

Cleaning vs. detailing

Cleaning removes everyday dirt and keeps a boat tidy. Detailing is a deeper, more thorough clean that attends to corners, seams, hardware and the spots a quick clean misses.

Cleaning and detailing do not include repairs, restoration, painting or mechanical work. For those, ask a marine specialist.

Hiring a mobile cleaning service

A mobile cleaner comes to your dock, marina or storage yard so nothing has to be moved. Before you book, check your marina’s vendor policy, ask about liability insurance, and get the scope and price in writing.

Agree on access, timing and who will be aboard, and do a walk-through at the end.
